That unique specimen is an assemblage of corundums var. ruby/pink sapphire from the Aappaluttoq Ruby Mine in South-West Greenland, found during summer 2021. The corundums are enclosed in a thin halo of white feldspar and the rest of the sample is composed of dark micas. The large quantity of dark micas is the result of the circulation of hot hydrothermal fluids alterating the host rock and helping to form the corundums we can find today.

Since rubies from Greenland are the world oldest being around 3 billion years old, formed kilometers below our feet at high temperatures, their journey through the crust to the surface for us to mine them have left them some scars. Thus we decided that it is not suitable to be used in jewelry. Nevertheless, as we found that piece attractive, it was saved from further processing and presented as “Souvenir”. Note: Unlike its younger cousins from Asia or Africa, rubies from Greenland are the oldest rubies on Earth as they were formed nearly 3 billion years ago. All the rubies from the Aappaluttoq ruby mine are mined legally using professional and responsible techniques. More info at this link (See website).
